The Why Series: Two Photographers

I’m starting a new periodic series called “The Why Series.” In this series I will explain why I do the things I do, why certain things are included in my wedding photography packages, and why they matter. In creating each package, I weigh and measure each element’s value and priority. In the first installment of the series, I want to talk about second photographers, what their benefits are, and why they can be so important.

Best of 2014: Wedding Photography

While I absolutely love photographing engagements, I love even more when I have the opportunity to photograph a couple’s wedding. There is so much raw emotion — not just love and excitement, but nervousness and stress. Everything floats in the air and creates this amazing and unique day. Things never go as planned; someone is late, or something is forgotten, but in every case the couple is married, things have been beautiful and sweet, and the people have been amazing. It’s hard to understate how much fun I had in 2014. Through the summer I photographed weddings in Spokane, Coeur d’Alene, Portland, Post Falls, Sandpoint, Bonners Ferry, and Los Angeles, to name a few. Each one was unique, beautiful, and emotional. This year I decided to try and pick one photo from each wedding that was truly unique and beautiful. The photos are not necessarily my favorite from each wedding, nor are they always the one to get the most likes on social media. Instead, myself, with some help from my colleagues, selected photos that were beautiful, emotional, touching, unique, strong, funny, and a number of other emotions — things that can change the way you perceive a wedding or people. Below are nineteen images that moved me, that stood out in a strong way, and were selected for a very specific purpose. Read on to learn more about each couple, each wedding, and each memory.

Best of 2014: Engagement Photography

2014 was an amazing year to be a wedding photographer. I had a blast at each wedding I photographed, whether it was in Spokane, Coeur d’Alene, Portland, or Los Angeles. But for most of those couples, their wedding day was not the first time we met. All of my wedding packages come with engagement photos. This is a big deal, because it allows me to work with the couple before the wedding. I get to hear about their story, get to know their personalities, and learn some of their quirks. Most notably, however, we have a chance to become comfortable with each other. The questions a lot of people ask going into a photo session get answered before the wedding day. They don’t need to know how I direct, or how a pose might turn out. They don’t need to wonder if I’m fun, serious, crazy, or awkward, because they already know. They know what the experience of taking photos with me is like, so when we come to their wedding day those mysteries are past, they are comfortable, they know the photos are going to be amazing, and they can relax and have fun. After all, isn’t that one of the main points? These are some of the most-liked engagement photos from 2014.

Coeur d'Alene Engagement: Jerod & Jennifer

Every couple has a story. Such stories have their funny, odd, cute, and beautiful moments. Hearing these stories one of my favorite things to do, because it’s the reason I’m there, and it’s the reason we’re doing this thing called a wedding. The coolest part is hearing the quirks — the little things that make their story different than everyone else — and watching the couple light up, adding in their little bits of the story. In this case, Jerod and Jennifer met for the first time at a wrestling match, where she was the scorekeeper for the other team.

Coeur d’Alene Family: The Nelsons

Happy New Year! For my first blog of 2015, I wanted to share the photos I took of the Nelson family. I met Tara Nelson for the first time at a wedding I photographed toward the end of the year in Coeur d’Alene. She was awesome, in spite of her telling me her name is “Tina,” which had me messed up for days. Regardless of messed up names, Mitch and Jody got married, Tara and her daughter won the lip-sync contest (which was awesome), and life moved on. A month or so later, Tara contacted me about doing some family photos for her and her family, and then some more photos for her extended family right before Christmas. I was pumped. It’s always fun meeting new people. We met on a very cold fall morning for one session, and a very wet December morning for the other. Both days were great, and I loved how both turned out.
