Best of 2014: Engagement Photography

2014 was an amazing year to be a wedding photographer. I had a blast at each wedding I photographed, whether it was in Spokane, Coeur d’Alene, Portland, or Los Angeles. But for most of those couples, their wedding day was not the first time we met. All of my wedding packages come with engagement photos. This is a big deal, because it allows me to work with the couple before the wedding. I get to hear about their story, get to know their personalities, and learn some of their quirks. Most notably, however, we have a chance to become comfortable with each other. The questions a lot of people ask going into a photo session get answered before the wedding day. They don’t need to know how I direct, or how a pose might turn out. They don’t need to wonder if I’m fun, serious, crazy, or awkward, because they already know. They know what the experience of taking photos with me is like, so when we come to their wedding day those mysteries are past, they are comfortable, they know the photos are going to be amazing, and they can relax and have fun. After all, isn’t that one of the main points? These are some of the most-liked engagement photos from 2014.

Coeur d'Alene Engagement: Jerod & Jennifer

Every couple has a story. Such stories have their funny, odd, cute, and beautiful moments. Hearing these stories one of my favorite things to do, because it’s the reason I’m there, and it’s the reason we’re doing this thing called a wedding. The coolest part is hearing the quirks — the little things that make their story different than everyone else — and watching the couple light up, adding in their little bits of the story. In this case, Jerod and Jennifer met for the first time at a wrestling match, where she was the scorekeeper for the other team.

Coeur d’Alene Family: The Nelsons

Happy New Year! For my first blog of 2015, I wanted to share the photos I took of the Nelson family. I met Tara Nelson for the first time at a wedding I photographed toward the end of the year in Coeur d’Alene. She was awesome, in spite of her telling me her name is “Tina,” which had me messed up for days. Regardless of messed up names, Mitch and Jody got married, Tara and her daughter won the lip-sync contest (which was awesome), and life moved on. A month or so later, Tara contacted me about doing some family photos for her and her family, and then some more photos for her extended family right before Christmas. I was pumped. It’s always fun meeting new people. We met on a very cold fall morning for one session, and a very wet December morning for the other. Both days were great, and I loved how both turned out.

I first met Michael and Julianna very close to a year ago for their engagement shoot. It was early January, and about 5 degrees outside, but we made it work and had an amazing time. I remember Michael and Julianna dropping little hints about a family when I did their Photo Story that day, but who knew when they would get started? Their wedding at Camden Ranch was absolutely beautiful, and I loved doing their Photo Story. So when I found out they were pregnant I was super excited. I have a two-year-old son and one on the way, so it was easy for me to relate. I’m so excited for these two and their new family.

Coeur d'Alene Wedding: Adam & Dana

I have thought a lot about this post. It isn’t only because this wedding at Settlers Creek was one of the most beautiful weddings I had the privilege of photographing all year, nor because it is the last wedding I photographed for the 2014 season. It’s not because of the amazing flowers, or the great food, or the awesome wedding party, or the tasty lemonade. It isn’t because I’ve known Adam for many years, and as a friend I wanted to write something amazing about him and his new, beautiful, absolutely awesome wife. No. It’s more than that.
