Brid and Groom at Cape Kiwanda for their Oregon Coast elopement.

Oregon Coast Elopement at Cape Kiwanda: Joel & Andie

Joel and Andie were going to have a normal wedding. They had their venue set, their photographer, date, food, everything. They were making the plans, and then they changed it. They decided it may be a lot more fun (and cheaper!) to get married out on the Oregon coast instead of doing the traditional thing here in Spokane. So they called me and pitched the idea. It was one of the easiest things I've said yes to in a long time. Traveling to the coast? Yes please! It's beautiful out there, and the idea of finding an awesome spot and taking photos sounded like a blast.

Destination Engagement: Joel & Andie

It all started with Monster caps. That is, Joel was collecting caps from Monster Energy Drinks and he asked Andie if she had any. Andie told me at this point that the only thing she thought of Joel was that he was "weird". Joel, in contrast didn't think much of anything. But a couple of weeks went by, and things changed for Joel.

Collage of some amazing wedding moments in 2017

Top 10 Favorite: Wedding Moments of 2017

If you missed last weeks blog I featured my 10 favorite wedding portraits from 2017. Portraits are so much fun for me. How can I capture this couple in this beautiful area, at this beautiful location, on this once-in-a-lifetime day? But there is still a degree of setup involved. That was basically the rule for this blog - no setup. At no point did I tell any of these people to "go there" or "do that". I love capturing things as they happen, I love capturing that emotion and that genuine look. The other dilemma I had was not showing the same thing. I had SO many great first look reactions this year I almost thought about making it a blog in itself. But this isn't just about first looks, it's about the whole day, and picking 10 out of the 100's of photos that I had already selected was not easy. So here they are, in no particular order, my 10 favorite wedding photography moments in 2017.

Top 10 Favorite: Wedding Portraits of 2017

At the end of every wedding season I get the chance to take a breath. There are so many things that push me through the year, things I love, things I want to try, different ideas and perspectives. In 2016 I tried different things with lighting, things that I think changed my photos in a powerful way. In 2017 I tried some different things with perspective, getting the photo that would otherwise not have been possible even 5 or 6 years ago. You'll see two photos in this blog that fit that category. It's always fun for me to try new things, to push wedding photography to another area, to say "what else can I learn?" These photos do not represent every wedding from 2017, not even close, but when the season was over, these are the ones I said to myself "man, I remember THAT one". It was super hard to narrow down the photos to my favorite 10. To give perspective, when I started culling through my photos to create my portfolio album for 2017, I pulled over 600 photos (which will definitely NOT all fit in the album). These are my top 10 wedding portraits for 2017.

Spokane Family Photographer Brent Looyenga's photo of the Forrester family in a field with snow and trees.

Family Photography: The Forrester Family

I've known the Forrester's for a long time. I remember when their three beautiful daughters were babies. So when they asked me to take some family photos for them I was pumped. We have never really been friends (I've known them, but I've never had the opportunity to really get to know them) so it was an awesome opportunity to get to know these people my parents have known for a very long time. Get to know their daughters and what they like, and just see them all interact. There is a quality there, among this beautiful family, that I found very attractive - they were fun, smart and relatable. What a privilege it was to be a part of it.
